FOOD PROVISION

Kirriemuir Food Hub

Website: Click Here
Telephone: 07745 639 144
Address: 3 Bellies Brae, Kirriemuir, DD8 4EJ

Their mission is to help combat food insecurity and reduce food waste by repurposing and redistributing food. With overlapping goals, we began working in partnership in September of 2020, to better the environment and enhance the community as a team.

Continually developing and expanding their operations, Kirriemuir Food Hub is now registered with the HUBBUB Community Fridge Network. This means that a proportion of the food saved from waste is available for anyone in the local area to collect and use, giving us all a chance to do our bit to address local food waste. So, next time you are in the town, make sure to nip into the hub and see what’s available! If using the Community Fridge, donations are welcome to help the food hub in addressing food insecurity. A suggested donation is a tin from the cupboard or a spare toilet roll.

During the first year of our partnership, over 17 tonnes of food has been saved from waste and redirected via the hub for people just like you to eat and enjoy! This is the equivalent of saving more than 60 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is like driving an average car from Kirriemuir to Forfar more than 20,000 times. Wow!

We work with a variety of other partners, including Alzheimer Scotland and the Angus Carer’s Centre. The hub is open 5 days a week, Monday to Friday from 9:30am- 4pm, and offers sessions ranging from arts and crafts to sporting memories.

Social prescribing is not new to the county of Angus. Strong partnership working and respectful collaborations across primary care and third sector have formed part of a vision to create ‘An Angus that actively cares’, which is an integral part of our Health and Social Care Strategic Plan. Angus is mostly a rural county where the population of 106,800 people is anticipated to grow and where demographic forecasts predict an aging population (perhaps more dependent on primary and other care services). There are also increasing challenges concerning to public health where poverty, mental health, alcohol and drug deaths are increasing across the county and in its neighbouring Local Authority, Dundee.
